PR1 VERADA DO ARIEIRO
The PR1 hike from Pico do Arieiro to Pico Ruivo is one of the most popular and scenic hikes in Madeira. It offers stunning panoramic views of Madeira's mountainous landscape, including deep valleys, jagged peaks, and lush vegetation. You will also pass through tunnels and see some endemic plants and wildlife.
HOW TO DO THE HIKE
WHERE DOES THE HIKE START?
While you technically can strat the hike from both sides, most people start at Pico Do Areiero. It is about a 40 min drive from Funchal and you can leave your car at the parking spot at the top. There is also a café.
THE HIKE DIFFICULT?
The hike is doable but not easy. You walk at an altitude of 1800m with lots of stairs down and back up. While the path can look at bit scary on photos, it is actually very well maintained and not scary at all. (even if you are afraid of hights.) The total hike takes about 7-8 hours (return)
WHAT TIME SHOULD YOU START?
The hike can get pretty busy during peak season so we recoemmend starting early. We had a late start that day, but next time I would start earlier. Many people also watch the sunrise at Pico Do Arieiro before starting the hike. (The café only opens at 9:00am).
WHAT SHOULD YOU TAKE?
Of course if you have proper hiking shoes that would be ideal. But the trek is very well maintained and we actually did it in running shoes. Remember as always in the mountains the weather can change quickly and the PR1 hike is actually above the clouds so it can get chilly at times. So dress in layers and make sure you have an extra (lightweight) jacket with you. And don't forget suncreen (at least factor 30) and sun glasses!!! The sky might be cloudy, but you are in the mountains and the UV radiation is strong. For the rest, some water, lunch and a powerbank should be enough.
BEST TIME OF THE YEAR:
The best time of the year for hiking on madeira is May, June and September, October.
